Färgfabriken has invited the architecture network AES to Open studio, where various creators regluarly are asked to take over the project rooms to let an audience meet the creative process when it is still in motion.

Architectural Environmental Strategies (AES) is a non-profit organization founded in 2009. They work with practical exploration methods in the broad field of architecture and view it as an experimental workshop run by curious exploration and idea-driven construction.

Platform for dance, art and critical ecology

The curators Rickard Borgström and Rebecca Chentinell are launching a new platform for curatorial and choreographic work. The platform will explore post-anthropocentric world views and discourses by inviting artists who work with their bodies in various ways. This will be done through an intertwining and exploration of different ecologies as well as re-writings of dance, choreography, and contexts. Through artistic practices the consequences of our actions are explored through political, technological and environmental perspectives.

The collaboration will operate in Färgfabriken’s project rooms as part of the Open studio programme connected to the Symbiosis-project in fall 2021. Together with two international artists, both working with the body and queer methods to create transgressive relationships, they will expand our understanding of human ecology.

Rickard Borgström [FI] curator/dramaturg/writer, works in the intersection of contemporary art, dance, and theatre. Primarily active in the Nordic region at various institutions.

Rebecca Chentinell [SE] Curator / Choreographer / Dancer / Editor, works investigatory and in alternative ways in order to produce and present dance and choreography, through both dance and visual art. She is active in multiple collaborations and several institutions.

Flat Octopus is an international artist and curator-run collective founded in 2019 and based in Stockholm. It consists of seven people with different professional and cultural backgrounds. The collective organises exhibitions, workshops and external projects and collaborations locally and internationally.

The aim of Flat Octopus is to represent a diverse art scene and offer exhibition possibilities to a broad range of artists in a multitude of venues. Alongside collaborations with galleries and studios, Flat Octopus works with the concept of apartment exhibitions where artists are invited to take over an apartment to stay for a period of time and produce an exhibition. A key part of the programme comprises studio visits, life drawing sessions, talks and performances.

Flat Octopus also runs a satellite mini-gallery, the Exhibition Case, a glass display case in an office space at Grindsgatan 27 in Stockholm with artists selected based on an ongoing open call. The Exhibition Case is realised in collaboration with Crash Boom Bang, a multi-disciplinary art studio.

Marvels & Catastrophes is an interdisciplinary group of artists who explore the ingenuity of humans in connection with natural disasters, unforeseen climate events and man-made disasters. They were formed in 2018 as an act of resistance, in hope to create a set of alternative creative strategies to deal with the growing catastrophic effects of climate change.

During two weeks, they will take over Färgfabriken's project rooms to play with ideas, patterns and concepts through their varied artistic practices, which can provide inspiration for new strategies, perspectives and approaches to the disasters we are just now in the midst of - the climate crisis and the pandemic.

Marvels & Catastrophes has been invited through the project Listen, which explores climate in the borderland between knowledge and emotions through art, research and collaborations across generational and knowledge boundaries. The project is supported by the Swedish Postcode Foundation and is carried out in collaboration with Virserum's Konsthall and Skellefteå Konsthall.

Färgfabriken's project Symbiosis takes over one of the project rooms in order to give space for ideas, sketching and meetings.

The artist Åsa Cederqvist's work is based on an interest in the ever-changing boundary between object and subject, as well as around the state of reformulation and transformation - in both the material and mental spaces.

While in the studio at Färgfabriken, Studio Åsa Cederqvist work will take it's vantage point in the cycle of materials and experiences that exist within the building and its surrounding areas, through displacements and alterations, and at the same time develop an interface of transformer processors, disintegration and structure.

BLOD (y) exponerar arbetsprocesserna med BLOD – ett forskningsprojekt kring gränsöverskridande innehåll, estetik och samarbetsformer i filmberättande.

Projektet utforskar samskapande över yrkesgränser, mellan vänskap och professionell relation samt bortom akademiska tillhörigheter – ett växelverkande skrivande, filmande, klippande – en flytande och oskarp linje mellan liv och konst. Vi sträcker ut armen och arbetar med vad vi får fatt i. Ett arbetssätt som väcker och utvecklar idéer som förgrenar sig icke-hierarkiskt ur olika aspekter av konstnärligt skapande.

Vår premiss är att på blodigt allvar transformera skuggorna av förluster till konstnärliga uttryck. Våra nyckelfrågor är hur söka efter breda tilltal utan att hamna i enkla svar på svåra frågor? hur vara tillgänglig samtidigt som vi utforskar snåriga frågeställningar?

I ett kompromisslöst tillsammans driver vi handgripligen alla konstnärliga processer, ifrågasätter maktstrukturer och konstnärsmyter på samma gång som vi utmanar filmmediets traditionella naturalism och berättarlogik i bildspråk och andra gestaltningar.

Filmen berättar om kroppsliga erfarenheter som gör en varse att våra kroppar tillhör moder natur. Som gör hur fan hon vill. Djuriska händelser där en själv är berättelsen. Med sina privata, intima äckligheter. BLOD gestaltar kvinnligt blödande från vagga till grav, men handlar inte bara om vätskor. BLOD undersöker även svallvågorna som väller upp mellan människor när kroppar sviker. Filmprojektet vill aktivt skapa en feminin blick, spränga buren som patriarkala maktrelationer hållit vårt kreativa vilddjur instängt i och släppa lös ett filmskapande på egna villkor.

Händelserna där arbetssätt, nyckelfrågor och konstnärlig ambition förkroppsligas, är egna och andras erfarenheter kring vara människa med hjärna, hjärta och livmoder.

R-lab’s Marvels and Catastrophes: Renewal and Metamorphosis, to be held at Färgfabriken 23- May - 2 June.

Renewal and Metamorphosis is the final in a series of 4 movements (see below) proposed by R-Lab concerning the major transformations affecting today’s natural and living environments. The two weeks at Färgfabriken will present a sequence of student led workshops, installations, performances, videos, and temporary exhibits outlining the world in its state of “new normal.” Open to the public.

This is the concluding series of workshops and performative public engagements to be featured in Färgfabriken's Open Studio. Renewal and Metamorphosis is developed and run by the participants enrolled in this year's R-Lab Marvels and Catastrophes course held at the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm. The sun rises every morning at the same place and sets every evening at the opposite side, is an artwork composed by several elements: a site-specific textile piece by the closest water of Fargfabriken, a second textile piece at the Open studio space, and photo documentation of the current development of Årstafältet. The fabric pieces are dyed with found materials and natural pigments from Årstafältet and a text by Maria Lamas is imprinted in them. The artwork intends to be critical towards exploitation processes natural areas goes through as most of accessible nature is man made or developed for commercial and industry purposes

Healing Tree Åsa Agerstam

The belief that the forest is a healing force goes back to Nordic folk-medicine where disfigured, odd trees could function as a receiver for human pain. By transmitting the disease materially and symbolically, the tree became the new carrier of the pain. The person cutting it down took a risk of catching whatever disease the tree was carrying. The physical surrounding of such a tree could also be used as a place of sacrifice where one could make a wish. With a trial and error perspective of a designer, a transformative replica of The Tree with it ́s original purpose will be made. Your intention is what makes it real.

Marvels and Catastrophes in 4 Movements.

The first movement, The Art of Disaster Interruptive, premiered in September of 2018 at the 4th Design Biennial in Istanbul. Located in the Earth School, the weeklong workshop dealt with remedial environmental practices inspired by the Şişhane crafts district in the heart of Istanbul. The second workshop, the Lexicon of Marvels and Disasters, held in January of 2019, was a one-day experimental Open Studio event developed to interact with the public, and called for submissions of ideas on what we will need to have with us to confront this ever changing present. The third movement, Nordic Hazardlands, took place in the northern Swedish city of Umeå at the UMA school of architecture at the end of March. The program included a seminar with the director of IBA in Thüringen Germany, and concluded with an initial draft for an Almanac for 2020.

Malin Heyman and James Hamilton, together with the students of the KTH ABE Graduate Program in Urbanism will occupy the Open Studio during the production, copy editing, review and printing of a book that will represent the students research from the Studio's Mexico City workshop and subsequent project "CO-OP City: Future Collective Domestic".

"CO-OP City : Future Collective Domestic" was a 10 week design studio in the Graduate Profram in Urbanism at KTH ABE. Students have worked in groups to produce proposals for collective domestic places and programs to engage public space in Mexico City. The work takes as it's departure point Hannes Meyer's 1928 manifesto Bauen and the contemporary research of Anna Puigjaner presented in her work Kitchenless City.

Food is a basic need and a luxury, both an art and a science crossing boundaries of time and place, a part of daily life and long term human survival. It is one of the largest and most innovative industries in the world economy and among the most urgent problems facing our world. Limited food access along with decreasing biodiversity and increasing dependence on fewer and fewer varieties and species of crops fostered by corporate monopolies loom as we rely on increasingly fragile large industrial-scale monocultures that alter ecological balance. Within the context of climate catastrophe, we must enter into debates on the role of the productive landscape through issues related to food.

Alimentarium is a first-year Master of Architecture foundations studio in the Department of Architecture at Texas A&M University that considers how agricultural production, processing, distribution and consumption of food intersects with architecture, urbanism, industry, economy, technology, culture, and politics. The course identifies and critically analyses how food has shaped the built environent in order to inform the production of architectural content, program and project for Alimentarium--a public knowledge center in the city of Bryan, Texas dedicated to the exhibtion, experimentation, and experience of food that might not only counteract or be resistant to existing capitalist logics but also create more beautiful, joyful, adventurous and equitable cities.

During 2017 Färgfabriken will be enriched by a creative residency cooperation with art/design trio Very Very Gold. The group occupies one of our project rooms, where they will work on their own projects and exhibitions, but also contribute to Färgfabriken’s ongoing work.

The creative residence will be ongoing in the project room at Färgfabriken until November 26th 2017. You're welcome to step into the studio/exhibition even if meetings, art production or installations are going on.

During autumn 2017 the trio Very Very Gold will intensify their personal projects and one by one take turns to take over the space with both experiments and finnished artworksh.
